I'm still putting together plans, but here's a better description of what you're getting yourself into. This is all tentative, and I'm sure it will change over the course of the game.
You will control a character in a collective story. The story takes place in the greater-Boston area in January of 2006. I have several ideas for the twists that this story might take, but the plot is entirely in the collective control of the characters in it: you can go anywhere and do anything, or you can do nothing. There is no "winning" condition, but it might be difficult to get out without a few bruises. I'll do my best to construct a coherent plot out of your actions and keep things interesting, but I'll need your help to do that.
Time permitting, every day I will present you with some things to decide as your character. I might just ask for your character's weekly social calendar, so I know what you'll be doing. You'll meet other characters, and interact with them. Horrible things might happen, and you'll be forced to decide how to react to them. Your decisions will then affect the world and the other characters, who will respond in turn.
I imagine that most of these activities will happen in email. I'd like to set up IM chats for some of the character interactions, and I might ask you to make split-second decisions if I see you in person, but generally you'll have a day to respond to anything that happens. If you don't respond within 24 hours, you lose your "turn". And the more you have to say, the larger an effect you'll have on the world.
As the story progresses, I'll publish a public narrative. Some parts will be hidden until they become common knowledge or the game is over (end of the year).
Start by coming up with your character. You can be a accountant if you want, but I suggest someone with a bit more curiosity, and maybe a secret to tell. Write a paragraph describing yourself. What is your name? What do you look like? Where are you from? What do you do, and how did you get to be doing it? What does your social life consist of? What don't people know about you? Tell me if any part of your description isn't public knowledge.
Finally, the game is still open to new players. If you know people who would be interested, send them this way.
